- RedHat and Firestarter
I just downloaded RedHat 7.3 and installed it on a spare computer. It was a very easy install and I was impressed at how well it detected and configured all of the hardware. RedHat's new automatic updater (RHN) is really convenient as well. I've already updated a lot of packages and I feel that it has really made that process a lot simpler.
This install is the start of my search for a new firewall. I have a pretty decent one at the moment but I feel that it's time for an update. I've downloaded and installed Firestarter, which is a very decent firewall creation tool with a GUI. It supports multiple interfaces, IP masquerading/NAT, and port forwarding. The GUI is a big plus because I'm not entirely comfortable editing the firewall rules by hand.
I was surprised at how hard it has been to find a decent firewall script with all of these features. There must be thousands of small networks that are exactly the same as mine. Multiple computers behind a firewall using NAT. A few internal webservers available to the public via port forwarding. The ability to easily add/remove ip addresses from the firewall to update access rules. And maybe the ability to access Samba shares on the internal servers via NetBios, etc.
Looking at the list I'm thinking it might not be such a simple setup after all, but then again, maybe it is.
- Will I Ever Finish GT3?
I'm not really focused on GT3 at the moment because the last 6 gold medals that I need to complete the game are gonna be really difficult. So instead of playing GT3 I started playing Le Mans 24 Hours. The game is much more fun than it looks.
The physics are fun, not as real as GT3 and no where near as real (read: annoying) as EA Sports F1 2001.
With Quick Race, Championship, Petit Le Mans, Le Mans, and Time Trials; the scope of the game is very complete. It's just too much fun to have a game with so much to complete. And with so many different challenges it really makes the most of the different tracks available. There are a total of 15 different tracks to learn.
Tire wear is a factor and it's most noticable bite comes in the form of the dreaded spinout. Nice touch and more fun than just not being able to turn. I wish the tire wear indicator used a better color scheme. It's really hard to tell when the tires are gone. I have noticed a fair lack of grip while the indicator still appears green, maybe yellow-green. I prefer the tire wear indicator for GT3.
So far I've finished Championship mode and I will probably start on Quick Race mode this week. I'll keep you posted on my progress.
- 6 Races to Go!
I'm back from my vacation and focused on GT3.
Here are my results from the Polyphony Digital Cup
Trial Mountain II: 33:08:742
Mid-Field Raceway II: 28:42:973
Rome Circuit II: 33:30:509
Special Stage Route 5 II: 33:06:923
Seattle Circuit II: 37:32:411
Apricot Hill Raceway II: 32:21:635
Deep Forest Raceway II: 29:59:744
Special Stage Route 11 II: 45:47:930
Grand Valley Speedway II: 44:30:268
Tokyo Route 246 II: 39:34:052Overall I'd say that it was not my best performance. Although some of the wins were blowouts, others were too close to brag about. My driving is not smooth enough and tire wear was a big problem.
I am now six gold medals away from getting 100% complete on GT3!
- Select Box Creativity
This site gets my vote for most interesting use of a select box (html). I'm sure the creators of HTML never thought a select box would be used quite like this.
- I Know I’m Lazy
Alanna asks, “Why haven't you been updating your blog.”
I reply, “Because I'm lazy.”Seems simple enough.
